Hallelujah 02:44
2.
after the fire falls when the chariot touches down while the glowing earth still smolders charcoal on charcoal ground you can see for miles and miles toothpicks in the black ash the drizzle draws out the steam and washes dark down the pass lightning flashes overhead a crow dips down for cover the wind is billowing and smoke is filling southern skies come on and make it new i can feel the rawness in me the flame took all the skin off little touches make me wince little pushes make me fall lay for hours in the misty air lay for hours and just my thoughts close my eyes to the bright lights shut the windows and let the blinds fall come on and make it new

Let It Go (free) 06:03
it's been so long since i've allowed a shred of belief in the night not a sound but i find myself trying to drown out the thoughts that call me out i can feel it next door there's a girl about my age she's been trying to give a book to me says she'll pray and i tell her i know that we're alone here that this is all there is here but i still feel it restless nights quiet tears a shell of pride the heart's soft fears i want to let it go ancient scars like the war's dead ash hauled so far but still guarded and stashed i want to let it go under my door there's a book and a note: "even the strong can break and i know that beneath those fighting words there's a mind that churns and surges i can feel it" the night air is crisp and the stars between the branches pulsing their charge and the heavy wind is blowing and it pulls me in, a longing i can feel it

The Opening 03:33
5.
it's been so long since i have seen you and i know you've pushed me out your mind i take my pen in hand to write you a letter i hope you read it through in time when the soil softens in the daytime and the big oaks' buds start pushing through when the sun hangs long at the end of the day then i'll be coming home to you when the snow is running down to the river and it's deepest parts churn black and blue when the warm wind sweeps through the valley again then i'll be coming home to you it's been so long since i have seen you and i know you've pushed me out your mind i take my pen in hand to write you a letter i hope you read it through in time

The Thief 03:21
the thief on the river he stole my wings he stole my wings and now's he's got away the thief on the river rising up like heat he turned his head and i saw that it was me a thief in the river a thief in the sea a thief on the land and a thief in the trees i took my knife out of it's sheath i took my knife out of it's sheath

8.
let the mountains shout for joy and the islands sing let the mountains shout for joy and the islands sing let the oceans meet the sky while the earth is green let the oceans meet the sky while the earth is young and green
9.
The Voice (free) 04:01
i heard a voice deep in my mind deep in my mind in the night i made a choice deep in my mind deep in my mind in the night a weight lifted off off of my mind down on the floor in the night i felt a joy stronger than wine flooding my mind through the night the years were unraveled time lost it's travel i saw every moment pass by the beast at the door was slane on the floor along with the dread and the fright you asked me to tell but i can't explain there's no words to open the door but i know my life is split in it's time what's after and what came before

about

This album was recorded between the winter of 2008 and the summer of 2009 in Ryan's apartment. All of the tracks on this album were written, played, engineered, and mixed by Ryan Costello.

Special guests: Matthew Antolick on drums on "After The Fire" and Can We Start Over?"; Greg Willson on horns on "The Thief" and "Creation Song".

This album was carefully mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music. Special thanks to Alan for his ears and mentoring.

Ryan was previously lead singer of The OaKs, a collaboration with drummer Matthew Antolick which expanded from a two-person folk project into a glorious six-piece ensemble. Check it out here:
