about

Comes Undone is an album born of pain and struggle. In 2013 Ryan Costello, former lead singer of FL indie-folk band The Oaks, was diagnosed with a health condition, the effects of which had been building for the last year. That diagnosis was the beginning of a descent into a personal darkness. Unable to write, or even play guitar without pain, it seemed as if everything valued was lost.

Slowly, over the next few years, Costello began to climb out of that hole and even write music again in late 2016. Comes Undone is about that slow climb. The songs delve into loss (Setting Sun), fracturing relationships (War, Wake Me Up), reconciling faith and suffering (The Fire, Job's Song), and even the attraction of suicide (The Jordan). Some songs, like Setting Sun, were recorded within an hour of being written, two microphones and a raw capture of immediacy of emotion in one take.

Comes Undone combines this raw lyrical honesty with Costello's melancholic and at times complicated acoustic guitar, banjo, and mandolin riffs. Featuring Greg Willson on baritone and alto saxophone and Jason Morris on drums, the arrangements are underpinned with jazz chordal elements, atmospheric synths, and echoing electric guitars. Mournful, but at times hopeful, the album is a journey from darkness into faint glimmers of light.
